Introduction

After an upgrade of the debian Squeeze kernel version (in order to fix a bnx2 / kernel bug : https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37382), I encounter the following error :

The fix

Fixing this error is not very hard, just follow these few steps :

  1. Add the required repositories (non-free / backports) to your sources.list :
    deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main contrib non-free
  2. apt-get update
  3. apt-get -t squeeze-backports install firmware-bnx2
  4. Check that the required firmware is where it belongs :
     ll /lib/firmware/bnx2/bnx2-mips-09-6.2.1a.fw
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 103868 Jan 21 2013 /lib/firmware/bnx2/bnx2-mips-09-6.2.1a.fw

Here we are, you should be safely rebooting your server now :)
